Acceptance Speech for 2020 Disturbing the Peace Award Angel Santiesteban Prats

Accepting this Award fills me with gratitude precisely due to Vaclav Havel’s personality, and his legacy as an artist and politician. It’s an honor for me that his name will be in my company from this moment forward.

Through this recognition I would like to bring global attention to the 61 years of Cuban dictatorship, where we the artists are censured, and we don’t have spaces to show our work, because those of us that dare to cross the limits imposed by the repressors, are later facing persecution, the worst blackmails, torture for us and our families, and later unjust prosecution and prison.

Those of us who dared to challenge these limits, like the San Isidro Goups, D Mongeles, and the plastic artist Tania Brugueras, to name three of the most renowned movements in Cuba, are then put under the worst repression. All the strength of the powerful regime, against artists that only want to reveal the truth as citizens, but the truth revealed by us has a greater importance in the eyes of the executioners.

We ask all the nations of the civilized world to increase their repeal of this totalitarian regime that threatens to stay in power indefinitely.

I want to dedicate this Award to the independent journalists who do an amazing job in Cuba, providing the people with the truth that they try to hide, and receive the aggression of the political police.

I also dedicate it to the scientist and writer Ariel Ruiz Urquiola, who received an unfair prison sentence, so that the dictatorship could follow a horrifying plan to inoculate him with the HIV virus, and is currently fighting for his life, and is trying to be heard by Human Rights advocates around the world.

I also dedicate it to the Cuban political prisoners, in particular Ernesto Borges who is Serving more than half of a 30-year sentence, and Aimara Perez Nieto, who has been four months in a punishment cell unable to see her young children.

In a special way, we bring attention to the Belorussian artist Maria Kolesnikova, whose life is in danger because of opposition to the Lukashenko dictatorship in Minsk.

My special thanks to the Jury for choosing me among so many candidates, and to let them know that this Award comes with the spirit of Vaclav Havel, and gives us a shield against the aggression of the dictatorship in my country, for the only crime of writing the script for the film “Plantados” which will be shown in movie theaters around the world and show the horrors committed by Fidel Castro against those that think differently.

More than being offended, the regime should feel shame, but we know that this is impossible.

I ask all of you to pray for Freedom in my country and for world peace, to live in a world where artists don’t fall into the “crime” of revealing the truth we see around us.

I would like to congratulate the other five nominees, who are with me with pride and happiness in receiving this award.

Palabras de aceptación del premio Vaclav Havel.

Aceptar este premio me brinda una gratitud infinita precisamente por la destacada personalidad de Vaclav Havel y su trayectoria como artista y político. Para mí es un honor que su nombre, a partir de este momento, me acompañe.

A través de esta convocatoria, quiero recabar la atención mundial sobre la permanencia por 61 años de la dictadura en Cuba, donde los artistas somos censurados y no tenemos espacios culturales para exponer nuestra obras, porque aquellos que osamos cruzar los límites establecidos por los represores, nos comienzan las persecuciones, las amenazas, chantajes de los más sucios, luego las torturas para nosotros y las familias, para terminar con injustas condenas y encarcelamientos.

Aquellos artistas que nos atrevimos a salirnos del redil, como a los grupos de San Isidro, D Móngeles y la artista de la plástica Tania Brugueras, por solo citar tres movimientos de los más destacados en el archipiélago cubano, reciben la represión más espeluznante que se puedan imaginar. Toda la fuerza del poder omnímodo, contra artistas que solo nos interesa decir la verdad como ciudadanos; pero una verdad dicha por nosotros, adquiere una connotación mayor antes los ojos del verdugos.

Pedimos al concierto de naciones del mundo civilizado, que acentúen la repulsión hacia el régimen totalitario que amenaza con perpetuarse en el poder de manera indefinida.

Quiero dedicar este premio a los periodistas independientes que hacen una labor encomiable dentro de Cuba y brindan al pueblo, la verdad que nos intentan ocultar, y por ello, reciben la saña de la policía política.

También al científico y escritor Ariel Ruiz Urquiola, quien recibiera una injusta condena, para que la dictadura consiguiera un macabro plan y, una vez que fuera llevado a prisión, inocularle el VHI SIDA, y que en estos momentos lucha por su vida, y se esfuerza por ser escuchado en las instancias de los Derechos Humanos a nivel internacional.

También a los presos políticos cubanos, en particular a Ernesto Borges que cumple más de las mitad de una sentencia de 30 años y Aimara Pérez Nieto, que lleva cuatro meses hacinada en una celda de castigo sin poder ver a sus hijos pequeños.

De manera muy especial, pedimos atención por la artista bielorrusa María Kolesnikova, que en estos momentos peligra su vida al enfrentar la dictadura de Lukashenko en Minsk.

Mi agradecimiento al jurado por haberme elegido entre tantos posibles candidatos, y hacerles saber que el premio, que va acompañado con el espíritu de Václav Havel, es efectivo y nos crea una coraza ante el encono de la dictadura que impera en mi país, por el único delito de hacer un guión para la película PLANTADOS, que próximamente será estrenada en los cines del mundo, donde narra el horror cometido por Fidel Castro contra los que piensan diferente.

Lejos del régimen sentirse ofendido, debería sentir vergüenza; pero ya sabemos que “no podemos pedirle peras al olmo”.

Por favor a todos, recen por la libertad de mi país y por la paz mundial, para vivir en un mundo donde los artistas no incurramos en el “delito” de contar la realidad que nos circunda.

Felicitar a los otros cinco premiados que me acompañan en orgullo y felicidad al recibirlo.
