Havel and His Era

The Vaclav Havel Library Foundation, in partnership with the New York Public Library and Columbia University’s W. Averell Harriman Institute & Institute of East Central Europe, organized a conference at the New York Public Library entitled Havel and His Times.

The event brought together leading archivists and scholars to discuss future VHLF programs and to explore avenues for mutual cooperation. The day was highlighted through a wonderful talk by Robert B. Silvers, Editor of the New York Review of Books.

The planning workshop was facilitated by Edward Kasinec, Harriman Institute & NYPL Curator Emeritus.

Preceding the planning workshop, VHLF hosted a welcoming event at Bohemian National Hall on October 10. Speakers included Anthony W. Marx, President and CEO of the New York Public Library, Alan Timberlake, Director of Columbia University’s Institute of East Central Europe, VHLF Board Chairman Craig Stapleton, and Jan Macháček, Havel Library Board Chairman. Carl Gershman, President of the National Endowment for Democracy and VHLF Advisory Board member, provided dinner remarks.
